Swim Par-tay!

While my sister was here visiting during my birthday, we took the boys over to their condo they were staying at to go swimming. This was Landon's first time actually getting in the water and playing. At first he didn't like it (the water was actually a little cold at first I think that was why) but it didn't take long for him to love every second in the water and wanting to jump off the sides like his big brothers were doing.  That kid has no fear... which gives me quite a lot of it!!!

It doesn't quite look like it, but he was laughing, he was starting to like it by this point.

Cute little baby Cater (my nephew) was also enjoying his first time swimming with his daddy.

Brayden is becoming a little fish. He's a pretty good little swimmer!

My niece Bailey was so fun to watch as she tried with all her might to kick and kick with everything she had to keep up with Brayden and Conner swimming around.

Uncle Jeff gave all the kids rides on his back across the pool, it eventually turned into ALL the kids piled  on him as he swam around. They all thought it was the greatest thing ever!

The boys absolutely love swimming! It was a fun afternoon with my sister and her family!

Another Year Older... Hopefully Wiser Too!

Well, it was my birthday a few weeks ago, and it was a fun day! My sister and her family were here and they helped Patrick throw me a fun day full of festivities!

My sister took me out to Cafe Rio (one of my all time favs!!!) for lunch, then for a pedicure. We had party complete with a pinata that was found in a deep dark far back corner of a closet in my mom's house which inspired the festive siesta!

As soon as the boys got home from school, the party started!! We opened presents and hit the head off that donkey pinata like pros!

Anyone else notice how much SMALLER the pinata is that I have to hit then the kids?? It's a conspiracy I swear! They were just trying to laugh at me on my birthday!!!

After the party and presents, Patrick and I went out to dinner together for the first time in months! It was so fun! We had some to die for food.... some yummy sushi... among other things.

Then it was back home for cake and ice cream with everyone. Party hats were wore by all!!!

Landon...

 My cute niece Bailey...

This may very well have been the best gift of the day... a Red Velvet Nothing Bundt Cake. Holy deliciousness!! This may need to become a birthday tradition for me! Best. Cake. Ever!

Thanks to all my incredible family for making my birthday such a great day! I seriously have great people all around me!

Air Force Base Petting Zoo!

During the summer, Brayden's Cub Scout pack did a special summer activity every month. The first one was their trip to the Old Mormon Fort. The next one was a hike up on Mt. Charelston, which he LOVED, but I didn't go with him, hence no pictures. But he had a blast. The last one was a trip to the "petting zoo" over on the Air Force Base. But not a petting zoo with animals, nope! It was a "petting zoo" with tanks, helicopters, airplanes, old military trucks, motorcycles, and guns..... all things you would find on a military base. It was basically a little boys dream land. They got to climb on everything, sit in or on everything, and pretend to fly anything that was there.
Despite the fact that Brayden had a pretty bad migraine that day, he still really wanted to go and see all the airplanes and tanks, so he did, and he loved it, even though he was feeling pretty horrible. Conner and Landon had a blast too.

Here are some of the cool things we saw...

Some really huge guns that move all over... they were seriously HUGE!

Some old military trucks....

Some very cool helicopters....

Lots of very cool tanks. I was however surprised at just how small they are on the inside. I can only imagine how uncomfortable it would be to sit in those small spaces, in uniform, in the heat of the desert where our troops are fighting, with gear and several other people. Not my idea of fun!

More tanks, helicopters, some cool looking motorcycles....

And some big ol' guns and the cockpits of fighter jets. By the way... cockpits are incredibly small too, you can definitely not be claustrophobic to be a fighter pilot!

It was stinking HOT that day, even though we went at 8 in the morning, so after a hour of running around playing and climbing in and on everything, we finished out tour of the "petting zoo" with a Krispie Kreme donut from our tour guides. It was such a great scout activity. We all had a great time.

Back to School.... again!

The boys went back to school the last week of August!!

They were pretty excited to go back, they both love school and getting to see their friends every day.

This year Brayden started third grade. He is loving it so far....

Conner got to go to first grade this year, and his favorite things so far in school is recess and PE. Go figure, the two places he gets to run around and be crazy are his favorites.

Here's to another great school year!

So now it's just me, Patrick, and Landon home all day long. Sometimes it's pretty quiet. I think Landon loves some alone time with mom and dad and to not have his brothers tell him to stop playing with their toys. But by the time they come home from their day at school, he is so excited and ready to play with his big brothers.

Some Fresh Mountain Air!

A few weeks before the boys started school, we went up to our ward camp out, but only for the evening. It was so fun, and the boys were in heaven! In fact, I pretty much didn't see Brayden or Conner at all while we were there, they were off running, getting dirty and playing with their friends.  Landon loved being outside. He loves to play outside, but since it's too hot lately for him to go play, he was loving the cooler weather and some fresh air. So did the rest of us. We went up to have dinner with our ward and visited with many friends. It was nice to get out of the house for all of us and get into some cooler weather! (notice in the pictures we are all wearing sweatshirts??)

We had to pull out some actual shoes for Landon to wear (sandals wouldn't be a good choice camping) and we got some of Brayden's old Nemo shoes out that light up as you walk. He thought they were the GREATEST thing ever!! He kept going up to anyone who would look and lift up his foot and say "fishy" while pointing at his shoes. He was pretty excited about them, it was so funny!

After a few hours of playing and hanging out, we drove back home, and when we got home, this is how we found the boys in the back seat.... Landon still wide awake, but the other 2 ran, hiked, and screamed every last ounce of energy out of them before we left. It was a great evening.

Apparently, brothers are great for sleeping on!

Maybe next year we will actually spend the night!

Where Were You??

As we are sitting here today talking to our children about what happened on 9-11-2001, it is all so vividly clear in our minds. I want our children to know how significant that day is in our country's history. I want them to know where their parents were and how they felt. So for that reason, I wanted to write about where we were on that day 10 years ago.....

We were still newlyweds, just the night before we had celebrated 6 months of being married. We lived in our small little apartment in Taylorsville. Patrick was still in school at the LDS Business College and I worked just a few blocks away at a Dr.'s office. Patrick had left for school before I had even gotten out of bed. I got up and got ready for work, and when I got into my car, I had a CD in to listen to, so I never heard the radio. I had no idea what was going on. I walked into my office that I worked in, and went over to my desk, put my purse in my drawer and heard someone a few doors down crying. Not sure why, I continue getting ready for my long day at work. Then the girl who had the desk next to mine came running down the hall with a radio and was frantically trying to plug it in. I made some comment about if she was gonna jam out all day to the radio or something and she just gives me this horrified look and asks me if I knew what had happened that morning. I said no, and she told me about the planes flying in to the World Trade Center towers and how they had collapsed and that America was being attacked. My heart sunk. We sat there listening to the news coverage in shock and disbelief about what had just happened in New York City, Washington, D.C, and Pennsylvania.

Patrick had heard about the first plane hitting the first tower on the radio on his way to school. When he walked onto school, all the classrooms had the news coverage on the T.V.'s and everyone was glued to it, many were crying. The teachers had all cancelled classes, but everyone was still just sitting, watching what was happening. Patrick saw the news coverage of the second plane hitting the tower and then minutes later saw the towers collapse. He called me at work and we talked about it for a few minutes and it just all seems so unbelievable that it was all happening. Soon after, he left school and walked the 2 blocks over to my office to see me before going home.

We still had patients to see that day. Some patients called and cancelled their appointments because the fear of another attack, even in Salt Lake City was very real and people did not want to leave their houses. Most things closed that day, schools, malls, public transportation. No one knew what to expect. But we still saw about half of our patients for the day. I will always remember one patient in particular that I saw that day. I don't remember her name, but I do remember that she had come in for her routine annual exam. I worked for an OB/GYN and due to some problems she was having, it was protocol to run a pregnancy test on her. I put her in the room to wait for the Dr. and went to the lab to run the pregnancy test, and it came up positive. She was pregnant. I always was a little worried when I had to tell patients news like this because you just never know how they might react. I went back to her room and told her she was pregnant. She burst into tears and hugged me and told me how they had been trying to have a baby for so long and she didn't think it would ever happen. And to get such great news on such a horrible day was just amazing for her. She told me it gave her hope. She hugged me for a long time, and we stood there and cried together for a minute. This perfect stranger and me hugged and cried and she touched my heart.

In the days that followed, I was an emotional reck! All the news coverage was just overwhelming. My heart broke as I listened to those who had lost loved ones, to the children that lost their mom or dad. Watched people jumping to their deaths from hundreds of stories up in the air. Listening to the phone calls that were made by the passengers of the planes that crashed that day, calling their wives, husbands, mothers, or fathers to say goodbye and tell them they loved them, and sometime only able to leave messages on answering machines for their families to hear later. My heart actually ached for these families that I never even knew. Patrick and I sat every night just watching the news and listening to the stories and holding each other. Things like this made you realize how quickly everything can change and how precious our loved ones are.

For the rest of that week, and maybe longer, I don't remember... one of the radio stations that I listened to   started playing "God Bless the USA" over and over again. Not another song was played, just that one. I listened to it over and over again and never got tired of hearing it. It was awesome! The pride of our country and the unity we saw was amazing. I loved it.

I didn't expect today to be so emotional about this anniversary. But as I watch the news footage all over again and try to explain to my children what happened and why it was such a tragedy, I find a knot in my throat and compassion in my heart thinking of the events of 9-11. I believe that in the mist of this horrible tragedy, the Lord provided many miracles. The stories of survival.... miracles. The First Responders who ran in to help... miracles. Normal everyday citizens pulling together to help one another in need... miracles. Even in our countries darkest hour, the Lord continued to bless His children.

I will NEVER forget that day. It planted in me an enormous sense of pride and gratitude for our country and the freedom we have.

I can without a doubt say that I AM proud to be an American.

God Bless America!
